NNPP National Secretary Clarifies: Coalition Of Opposition Parties Not About 2027 Elections
In a recent interview with Punch, Oladipupo Olayokun, the National Secretary of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), has refuted reports suggesting a merger of opposition parties against the All Progressives Congress (APC) in preparation for the 2027 general elections…..CONTINUE READING
Olayokun clarified that the coalition formed by his party and others in the opposition about a month ago was not about the 2027 elections but aimed at resisting an alleged plan by the APC to overturn states they lost through the ballot box using the court system.
While acknowledging the speculations, Olayokun stated, “Anytime we open the television or radio, we hear people talking about the NNPP coming to join them because I am the National Secretary of the NNPP today, and I can’t remember any day we went to a meeting where we discussed the merger of political parties.”
He emphasized that the recent coalition was a response to concerns about the APC’s attempts to gain states through legal means after losing at the polls. Olayokun acknowledged the possibility of another coalition against APC and President Bola Tinubu emerging before the 2027 elections but asserted that, as of now, the reported merger was not accurate.
This clarification contradicts the position of political economist Pat Utomi, who has previously stated that major opposition parties have finalized plans to form a coalition in preparation for the 2027 general elections in Nigeria. The NNPP National Secretary’s statement highlights the nuanced nature of political alliances and the need for precision in reporting on political developments.
