Ondo Community Faces Escalating Hoodlum Attacks

Speaking separately to PUNCH Metro via telephone interviews, some residents expressed fear as the attacks have become frequent, prompting many to flee to safer locations.

The community, formerly under Ikale Local Government Area with headquarters in Okitipupa, was reassigned in 1991 when the Federal Government created more local governments, resulting in the establishment of Irele Local Government with headquarters now in Irele.

Multiple videos shared through WhatsApp messages depict the aftermath of the attacks, showing razed houses, motorcycles, and destroyed plantain plantations and wooden canoes used for transportation.

Mr. Fashadeju Wokan, a resident, lamented the attacks and criticized the perceived inaction of the police despite reports filed by the community. He detailed the devastating impact of the attacks, including the destruction of bridges and houses, forcing many to flee to Irele Township for safety.

Chief Samuel Akinduyigbe, the Baale of Eyinrowo, emphasized the residents’ plight, noting that fear of further attacks prevents them from accessing their farms.

Similarly, Chief Tola Omogunwa, the Igbeleju of Irele, decried the continuous attacks, describing the perpetrators as terrorists due to their masked presence and violent actions.

Responding to the community’s claims, Ibukun Odunlami, spokesperson for the state police command, urged residents to approach the area command if they feel their complaints are not adequately addressed.

The community’s plea for intervention highlights the urgent need for authorities to address the escalating insecurity, protect residents, and restore peace to the affected area.
