Digital payment platform OPay has threatened legal action against an user over a social media post claiming that the fintech company would shut down its operations on September 1, 2026.

The user, identified as Cute Hafserh (@Haifah_Er_Abba), reportedly shared the claim online, prompting OPay to issue a formal warning and demand that the post be removed.

According to the company, the publication contained false and misleading information capable of causing reputational damage and misleading members of the public about its operations.

OPay, through its Chief Legal Counsel, Akinfolabi Moses Rokosu, directed the user to take down the post and warned that the company was prepared to pursue legal action if the publication remained online.

The warning followed an earlier clarification by OPay denying reports that it planned to suspend or shut down its services on September 1.

The fintech company had reassured customers that its operations would continue as normal and urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports concerning an alleged shutdown.

In its latest response, OPay maintained that it would not tolerate the continued circulation of information it considers false or misleading about its business activities.

“OPay takes the publication and circulation of false and misleading information seriously,” the company stated.

It further warned: “This is a formal warning against the continued publication and circulation of false and misleading information concerning OPay.”

The company added, “If you’re considering spreading false information about OPay, consider this your warning.”

The development has drawn attention to the growing concern among financial technology companies over the spread of unverified claims on social media, particularly reports capable of causing confusion among customers and affecting confidence in digital payment services.
