Otti Speaks On ‘New Approach’ To Secure Nnamdi Kanu’s Release
Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has revealed that his administration is employing a unique strategy to facilitate the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.
Mr. Otti made this statement while addressing reporters at a media session in Umuahia on Sunday night, as reported by Channels TV.

“I believe in results rather than media hype. We do not want the media noise. We are working very hard to ensure his (Kanu’s) release,” he said.
The governor said the administration of President Bola Tinubu was not responsible for the incarceration of Mr Kanu.
“My personal position is that the new government does not need to inherit the wrong thing of the previous administration,” Mr Otti said of Mr Kanu’s case with the Nigerian government.
The governor expressed confidence that his novel approach would achieve the desired outcome.
Mr. Kanu was initially apprehended in 2015 during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari. He was subsequently granted bail in April 2017, but fled the country following a military incursion into his residence in Afara-Ukwu, near Umuahia, Abia State, in September of that same year.
In June 2021, he was re-arrested in Kenya and brought back to Nigeria, approximately four years after his initial departure.
On October 13, 2022, the Court of Appeal in Abuja ruled that Mr. Kanu was unlawfully brought back to Nigeria and that this action violated the country’s extradition treaty and his fundamental human rights. Consequently, the court dismissed the terrorism charges against him and ordered his release from the custody of the State Security Service (SSS) in Abuja.
However, the government declined to release Mr. Kanu, citing concerns about his potential unavailability for future court proceedings and the potential for increased insecurity in the South-east, his place of origin.
The government, acting through the Attorney General of the Federation, later appealed the court’s decision and obtained an order from the Supreme Court to suspend its execution.
Several leaders in the South-east, including Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State and his counterpart in Enugu State, Peter Mbah, have continuously urged the Nigerian government to release Mr. Kanu in order to address the insecurity in the region. However, their request has yet to be granted.
On November 3, 2022, Mr. Kanu, through one of his lawyers, Mike Ozekhome, filed an appeal against the stay of execution order at the Supreme Court. The court has not yet resumed proceedings on this appeal.
However, earlier this month, the court announced that on December 15, it would render a verdict on the Nigerian government’s appeal challenging the Court of Appeal’s prior judgment that led to Mr. Kanu’s release.
