The Presidency has strongly criticised Aloy Ejimakor, lead counsel to the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, for participating in a protest demanding his client’s release.

According to Ireporter Online, the Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, faulted Ejimakor’s decision to join the #FreeNnamdiKanu demonstration organised in Abuja by activist Omoyele Sowore. The protest was held to demand Kanu’s freedom following his prolonged detention by the Federal Government.

In a statement posted on his handle on Monday, Onanuga described Ejimakor’s participation as “unethical” and “shambolic,” insisting that the lawyer’s actions violated the legal principle of sub judice, which prohibits public discussion or interference in ongoing court matters.

The presidential aide accused Ejimakor of abandoning his professional responsibility to focus on Kanu’s treason case, choosing instead to “engage in extra-legal tactics” aimed at influencing the judicial process.

Onanuga further alleged that Ejimakor’s involvement with what he termed a protest “mobilised by a career anarchist” undermined the integrity of the legal profession. He urged the appropriate legal authorities to examine the matter and impose disciplinary measures where necessary.

In his words, “I spotted Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, among the small group of protesters mobilised in Abuja by Omoyele Sowore. I wonder what Mr. Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest. As a lawyer, he should understand the principle of sub judice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court. Instead of preparing a strong defence for Kanu, he has resorted to extra-legal tactics, aligning himself with a career anarchist. Legal authorities should consider appropriate sanctions for such unethical conduct.”
