The recent arrest of Hon. Collins Aigbogun, chairman of Esan West Local Government, has sparked outrage and drawn significant attention to his alleged role in orchestrating political violence across the region. Currently in custody at the Police Force Headquarters in Abuja, Aigbogun has been accused of personally leading attacks on All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters, culminating in severe injuries and the hospitalization of several individuals.

One of the most shocking incidents tied to Aigbogun’s actions is the brutal attack on Mr. Imuensili Aifuobhokhan, an APC member from Illeh (Ward 10). Along with others, Aifuobhokhan was reportedly assaulted by thugs allegedly led by the chairman himself. These violent acts have left victims, including Mr. Aifuobhokhan, in critical condition—some so severely injured that they are unable to speak.

The police investigation into Aigbogun’s activities has unveiled more layers of criminal involvement. According to Edo State Commissioner of Police, Nemi Edwin-Iwo, the chairman had long been on the police’s wanted list for other criminal charges. His recent arrest was prompted by his reported involvement in leading thugs to disrupt political meetings and physically attacking APC members. One such attack occurred at the shop of a local businesswoman, Madam Dorothy, where Aigbogun and his associates allegedly destroyed APC campaign vehicles, including a mobile public address system and branded campaign bus.

Aigbogun’s attempts to deflect blame by accusing supporters of APC rival, Akpakomiza, have failed to hold ground. While Aigbogun pointed fingers at Akpakomiza’s camp, the latter was actively campaigning in a different district at the time of the violence, raising suspicions about Aigbogun’s fear of losing political relevance in his own ward.

As the Edo State Police continue their investigation, it has become clear that this is not an isolated incident. The violent campaign methods employed by Aigbogun have raised alarms about the overall state of political affairs in Esan West. The police, however, are committed to restoring law and order, with Commissioner Edwin-Iwo reassuring the public that the forthcoming governorship election will be free from intimidation and violence.
