In a recent post on his official X account, Obi expressed alarm over the fact that many Nigerians are now compelled to spend all their earnings solely on food. Citing the hunger index forecast, the former Anambra Governor lamented the growing complexity of the situation.
Obi urged the Nigerian government to prioritize the security of farmers and provide them with adequate support to boost food production in the country.
He remarked, “I was deeply troubled when, in January 2023, the Cadre Harmonisé, a UNICEF publication, warned that nearly 25 million Nigerians were at risk of hunger between June and August 2023 if urgent measures were not taken.”
“By the end of 2023, this number had escalated to around 26.5 million, signaling a worrisome trend. Now, the latest forecast indicates that approximately 31.5 million Nigerians face acute hunger and severe food insecurity between June and August 2024,” Obi added.
He emphasized the urgent need for proactive measures to combat hunger, advocating for a shift from consumption to production by prioritizing agricultural investment, particularly in the vast arable lands in the Northern regions.
Obi highlighted the challenges posed by insecurity and terrorist attacks, which impede farmers’ activities, and emphasized the negative impact of monetary policies on small businesses in the agricultural sector.
In conclusion, he stressed the importance of securing farmers and providing robust support to enhance food production, reaffirming his commitment to building a productive Nigeria in the face of adversity.
