The Gbedu Effect: PDP’s Mass Defections And Okpebholo’s Political Ascendancy In Edo State
By Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah
When the Gbedu enters the body, it’s undeniable. It’s a rhythm that transcends barriers, compelling everyone to move in unison, celebrating the essence of life itself. In the political landscape of Edo State, a similar phenomenon is unfolding, with the mass defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), spurred by the rising popularity of Senator Monday Okpebholo.
Just like Burna Boy’s infectious beats draw people together, Okpebholo’s charisma and vision are uniting the people of Edo behind him. The PDP, once a dominant force in the state, is now experiencing a seismic shift as its supporters flock to the APC, attracted by the promise of change and progress championed by Okpebholo.
The implications of this mass exodus are profound. For the PDP, it signals a significant loss of support and influence in Edo State. As key members defect to the APC, the party’s strength and cohesion are weakened, leaving it vulnerable in the upcoming gubernatorial election.
On the other hand, the APC stands to gain immensely from these defections. With Okpebholo’s rising popularity, the party now boasts a formidable candidate with widespread appeal across the state. His grassroots connections and ability to mobilize support are invaluable assets that could tip the scales in favor of the APC come election day.
Moreover, the influx of former PDP members into the APC strengthens the party’s grassroots structure and expands its reach within Edo communities. This grassroots support is crucial for voter mobilization and turnout, giving the APC a significant advantage over its rivals.
