Tinubu Told To Rename INEC Secretariat After Akeredolu

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been urged to rename the Secretariat of the Independent National Electoral Commission in the nation’s capital in honor of the late Ondo State Governor, Chief Rotimi Akeredolu, SAN.

The Human Rights Writers Association Of Nigeria (HURIWA), expressing condolences to the people of Ondo State for the loss of their governor, emphasized that Chief Rotimi Akeredolu would always be remembered as a champion of democracy and equity.

In a similar vein, the group advised Nigerian politicians to learn a philosophical lesson from the passing of the legal giant and to avoid imposing hardship, corruption, and misgovernance on citizens during their terms in public office.

HURIWA acknowledged the challenging political circumstances surrounding the late governor’s succession, noting the efforts by his loyalists to disrupt the constitutional transition process to the then deputy governor. Despite this, the departed governor of Ondo State is celebrated as a democracy icon who tirelessly worked to bring power back to the South.

The organization also criticized the immediate political associates and family members of the late governor for mishandling the political situation before his demise. It accused them of concealing his true health condition and contributing to a near breakdown of law and order in Ondo State by failing to transfer power to the deputy governor, Mr. Goodluck Aiyedetiwa. HURIWA highlighted that it took an unconstitutional intervention by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to facilitate the proper process, allowing the deputy governor to assume the role of governor while the late governor addressed his health challenges.

“HURIWA wants the political class in Nigeria to learn positive and constructive lesson that nothing and no position lasts forever just as the politicians must accept their individual and collective responsibility to abide by the rule of law and by the tenets and provisions of the constitution even as the Rights group has asked the new governor of Ondo State to set up an investigative commission to ascertain the veracity or otherwise of the groundswell of allegations that certain persons connected to the late governor did forged his signature and withdrew humonguous amount of State funds which they never accounted.

“HURIWA recalled that late Akeredolu died on Wednesday after a prolonged illness just as he was born on July 21, 1956, Akeredolu attended Aquinas College Akure and Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife.
He was Attorney General of Ondo State from 1997-1999.

“He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 1998. Akeredolu was president of Nigeria Bar Association from 2008 to 2010.”
