[UPDATE] Federal Government Allocates N17 Billion To Fast-Track Abuja-Kaduna-Kano Highway Project

Former Minister of State, Works and Housing, Umar El-Yakub, had earlier indicated in October 2022 that the Kaduna-Abuja highway and Zaria-Kano road were anticipated to be finalized by early 2023 to minimize inconvenience for road users.

However, challenges, including security issues in 2022 and the relocation of communities along the Zaria segment, led to delays.

Former Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, acknowledged in April 2023 that the previous administration faced challenges in fulfilling its promise, resulting in the project extending beyond his tenure.

Only the Kaduna to Zaria section was completed out of the three sections initially planned.

Umahi, during the recent inspection, attributed the delays to a lack of funds but reassured the commitment of the government to adhere to the revised schedule. He revealed that the approval of the N17 billion payment had been granted, with additional finances to be authorized in due course.

Umahi explained that the rescheduled completion date was based on Julius Berger’s commitment to completing 15 kilometers per month. The total length of the road is 375 kilometers, equivalent to 750 kilometers of dual lanes.

The Kaduna to Zaria section is completed, leaving only 20 kilometers between Zaria and Kano, which is under redesign with concrete pavement.

Minister Edun emphasized President Tinubu’s consideration of the prompt completion of the road as a top priority, recognizing its significance in rejuvenating and stabilizing the nation’s economy.

He stressed that infrastructure, particularly road networks, plays a vital role in reducing food prices by facilitating efficient transportation and the smooth movement of agricultural products. Edun further expressed the administration’s commitment to ensuring that goods move freely across the country, leading to reduced food prices, lower inflation, and a stabilized economy.
