Why Have The Igbos Not Developed The States In The South East? And They Were The Same People Insulting Oba Of Benin Who Didn’t Say Up To This- Reno Omokri
Written By Oshiobugie Omo-Ikirodah
Former presidential aide to Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, Reno Omokri, took to Twitter to criticize the leader of the Ohaneaze group for claiming in a trending video that Igbos developed Lagos from a swamp to the mega city it is today. CONTINUE READING
Omokri questioned the logic behind such a statement, pointing out that cities in Igboland like Enugu, Awka, Nnewi, Aba, Abakaliki, Owerri, among others, are not swamps, yet they haven’t been developed like Lagos.
He emphasized the need for elders like Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President of Ohana’eze Ndi’Igbo, to speak in ways that promote unity in the nation and criticized the provocative nature of the statement. Omokri also drew a parallel with the controversy surrounding insults directed at the Oba of Benin, highlighting the inconsistency in responses.
In his tweet he stated; “Does it make sense to say Lagos was a swamp until Igbos developed it to what it is today, when Enugu, Awka, Nnewi, Aba, Abakaliki, Owerri, and other cities in Igboland are not swamps, yet Igbos have not developed them like Lagos? If you can develop a swamp into a mega city, why have you not developed dry land into heaven? We love our Igbo brothers and sisters, but Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the President of Ohana’eze Ndi’Igbo, should be careful how he talks.” “
We need elders, like Iwuanyanwu, to speak in ways that build unity in our nation. What type of provocative statement is that? That you developed Lagos into what it is today. And these were the same people insulting the Oba of Benin. Did the revered Benin monarch say up to this before one 73-year-old, who should know better, insulted the hell out of him?”

The Igbolands of south -east Nigeria engaged the Nigerian authorities in a 36 months long civil war that arose from disputes over January 1966 coup d’etat. Hostilities on both sides ceased in January 1970, when the military govt of Yakubu Gowon declared a no Victor no vanquished status on the outcome, urging all to embrace peace and unity and return to normal civilian time. Political, social and economic progress, nosedived in the areas across the Niger river. Iboland seem to be marginalized and the adventurous individuals saw opportunities in cities across the length and breath of Nigeria. Those who ended up in Lagos set up stalls in the markets of old Jankara, Apongbon, Iddo, Oyingbo, Kajola etc. Of course the space was enough to contain the teeming number of traders! Most Lagos Island front shops used to be Room and palour apartment space in 1950’s /60’s Nigeria !
Stretching out from parts of Suru-lere to Iponri and onwards to Iganmu, Orile, Old Alaba market were all swampy. Necessity for the Ibo stall less trader became the mother of invention, as they simply used available basic materials to erect crude stalls in the beginning. Alaba market for example, had to relocate to the Ojo due to the congestion at the previous location. These triggers to development were unconsciously Implanted due to the actors / pioneers quest for economic survival . Ohaneze Ndigo President General – Mr Iwuanyanwu is correct in his assertion. Only those who are not in the know of these past occurrences will be unable to give clear account of the truth of these issues.
