Senator John Enoh, the newly appointed Minister of Sports Development, has responded to critics who raised doubts about his capability to excel in his role. He firmly asserted that it is not a prerequisite to have a background as a footballer to effectively lead the sports sector.

The appointment of the 57-year-old Enoh by President Bola Tinubu last Wednesday sparked skepticism among stakeholders in the sports industry, given his background as a farmer and politician, seemingly unrelated to sports.

Enoh defended his appointment by emphasizing that effective leadership in the sports sector does not necessarily demand direct participation as an athlete. He highlighted the qualities of leadership, transparency, and sector understanding as paramount.

Enoh acknowledged that anyone appointed to the position would make an effort to comprehend the sports sector, irrespective of their prior background.

Furthermore, Enoh argued that being a former footballer doesn’t inherently guarantee one’s capacity to provide efficient leadership in the sports arena. He shared that while he did play football, it doesn’t solely define his suitability for the ministerial role. He acknowledged that he might have played the sport but not necessarily possess the leadership skills required for the position.

Enoh also commented on media coverage, noting that he anticipated the focus on his farming business. He acknowledged the media’s freedom to emphasize specific aspects of his profile. He admitted that critics were correct in noting his farming background but encouraged the media to observe his work and contributions in the sports sector following his appointment.

The Cross River-born politician expressed hope that his tenure as the Minister of Sports Development would bring about positive change in a sector that holds a special place in the hearts of Nigerians.
