World Braille Day 2026: Remi Tinubu Calls For Stronger Inclusion And Digital Accessibility
According to Ireporter Online, First Lady Oluremi Tinubu has urged authorities across all tiers of government to intensify policies and partnerships that promote inclusion and empower blind and visually impaired Nigerians to live independently and contribute meaningfully to national development.
The First Lady made the call in a goodwill message commemorating World Braille Day 2026, observed on January 4. She emphasized the importance of creating inclusive environments and strengthening institutional commitments to accessibility, especially as the country advances its digital transformation agenda.
Mrs Tinubu stressed that true inclusion must extend beyond symbolic gestures and be reflected in practical support systems that ensure equal opportunities for all citizens, regardless of physical ability. She described Braille as a vital tool that preserves dignity and independence for visually impaired persons, noting that its significance has grown in an increasingly digital world.
She cautioned that the rapid global shift toward digital platforms could further marginalize persons with visual impairments if accessibility is not intentionally incorporated into new technologies and public systems. She therefore called for deliberate efforts to close the digital gap by prioritizing accessibility in the digital age.
The First Lady further highlighted the importance of integrating Braille with modern technology, stating that such integration is essential to guaranteeing equal access to information, education, and economic opportunities for visually impaired individuals.
Reaffirming her commitment to inclusion, Mrs Tinubu noted that an inclusive society promotes national unity and strengthens collective progress. She called on government institutions, private sector players, and civil society organisations to work together in advancing accessibility standards and supporting policies that enable every Nigerian to participate confidently in nation-building.
