Yahaya Bello Faces 19 Criminal Charges For Breach Of Trust And Money Laundering

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has filed 19 criminal charges against former Kogi State governor, Yahaya Bello, for alleged criminal breach of trust and money laundering. According to the charge, Bello is accused of converting a total sum of ₦80,246,470,089.88 belonging to the Kogi State government in February 2016 for personal use, in violation of Section 18(a) and punishable under Section 15(3) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011, as amended.

Among the allegations, Bello is accused of using individuals, including Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu, to indirectly acquire properties in Abuja using proceeds believed to be from unlawful activities.

Justice Emeka Nwite granted an ex-parte order allowing the EFCC to arrest Bello and bring him to court for arraignment. The former governor, along with his nephew Ali Bello, Dauda Suleiman, and Abdulsalam Hudu, is set to face trial before Justice Nwite.

The charges include counts related to money laundering, with specific allegations of converting funds for personal use and acquiring properties using proceeds from unlawful activities. The EFCC is determined to prosecute the case, emphasizing its commitment to combating corruption and ensuring accountability.
