No Mercy For Corruption Tinubu Rejects Calls To Save Yahaya Bello From EFCC Prosecution
The reason President Bola Ahmed Tinubu did not step in to halt the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s (EFCC) investigation of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello has been clarified…..CONTINUE READING
Yahaya Bello, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC) and a key member of Tinubu’s 2023 campaign team, has been accused by the EFCC of involvement in a N110 billion fraud case.
Despite suggestions that Bello was being unfairly targeted, the President has maintained that the EFCC must carry out its duties without interference, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to fighting corruption. A source from President Tinubu’s inner circle revealed that the President’s refusal to intervene was a deliberate move to signal that his government would not tolerate corruption, regardless of political or ethnic affiliations.
The EFCC, under the leadership of Ola Olukoyede, initially charged Bello with N80 billion in alleged money laundering offenses, but this figure was later increased to N110 billion in updated charges. Bello and his associates were accused of using the laundered funds to acquire 12 properties in Abuja. Following repeated attempts to arrest Bello, who had failed to appear in court, he was declared wanted by the EFCC, and the Nigerian Immigration Service placed him on a watchlist.
A presidency source explained that Tinubu’s decision to let the EFCC proceed with Bello’s prosecution was part of his broader strategy to demonstrate that corruption would no longer be overlooked due to political connections. Tinubu is determined to break the tradition of shielding political allies from prosecution and strengthen public trust in Nigeria’s institutions. By allowing the EFCC to operate independently, the President is sending a strong message that his administration is committed to transparency, accountability, and upholding the rule of Law.
