You Can’t Bet Against Him: Oshiomhole’s Template for Staying Ahead of the Political Curve
By Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah
In politics, relevance is one of the hardest things to sustain.
Winning an election is difficult. Remaining influential long after the applause fades is even harder.
Across Nigeria’s political landscape, many prominent figures have enjoyed moments at the top only to gradually disappear from the centre of national conversations. Yet, every so often, there are individuals who seem to defy that pattern.
One of those individuals is Adams Oshiomhole.
From labour activism to the Government House in Benin City, from national party leadership to the Nigerian Senate, Oshiomhole has consistently found ways to remain politically relevant through changing administrations, shifting alliances, and evolving political realities.
The question is simple:
What is the template?
Why do many political observers hesitate to bet against him?
Part of the answer lies in his understanding of political structures.
While many politicians focus primarily on holding office, Oshiomhole has often demonstrated a strong appreciation for building networks, nurturing loyal supporters, and maintaining grassroots connections. Political offices come and go, but structures often outlive the individuals who occupy those positions.
His journey itself reflects this ability to adapt. After emerging from the labour movement to become governor of Edo State, he later rose to become National Chairman of the APC before returning to elective office as Senator representing Edo North. Few politicians successfully navigate so many different political stages while remaining influential.
Another factor is resilience.
Political careers are rarely smooth. They are filled with victories, setbacks, disagreements, and unexpected turns.
Oshiomhole’s political history contains all of these.
Yet, even after periods of intense political turbulence, he has repeatedly managed to return to the centre of major political discussions. That ability to recover, reorganise, and remain relevant has become one of the defining features of his public life.
Timing also appears to play a role.
Successful politicians do not merely react to events. They understand when to intervene, when to mobilise, and when to make their voices heard.
Whether discussing governance, accountability, party affairs, or national issues, Oshiomhole has consistently demonstrated a willingness to engage in debates that shape public discourse. His direct style often generates controversy, but it also ensures that he remains part of the conversation.
There is also the question of political memory.
Many politicians are remembered for a single office or a single election cycle.
Oshiomhole’s political story spans multiple generations of voters. Younger politicians know him as a senator and former national party chairman. Older Nigerians remember him as one of the country’s most prominent labour leaders. Edo residents remember his years as governor. Each chapter adds another layer to his political capital.
For ordinary citizens, this discussion is about more than one politician.
It is about understanding how political influence is built and sustained.
Power in a democracy is not only determined by elections. It is also shaped by organisation, consistency, visibility, and the ability to remain connected to evolving political realities.
Whether one agrees with Oshiomhole’s positions or not, his career offers a fascinating case study in political longevity.
Politics remains unpredictable.
New alliances emerge. Old alliances collapse. New leaders rise.
But some political figures develop a reputation that makes observers reluctant to write them off.
For Adams Oshiomhole, that reputation has been built over decades of activism, governance, party leadership, and political resilience.
And perhaps that is the lesson.
In politics, you may disagree with him.
You may challenge him.
You may even oppose him.
But history suggests that betting against Oshiomhole has rarely been a comfortable wager. 📌
