During the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, Hamas, a Palestinian group, launched a surprise attack on Israel.
This offensive, which involved gunmen breaching security barriers and a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza, occurred exactly 50 years after Egyptian and Syrian forces initiated an assault during the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur.
This endeavor aimed to regain territory that Israel had acquired during a short conflict in 1967.

Below is a detailed account of how this audacious attack transpired:
Around 6:30 am (03:30 GMT), Hamas initiated a massive rocket barrage into southern Israel, with sirens audible as far as Tel Aviv and Beersheba. Hamas claimed to have launched 5,000 rockets in this initial onslaught, while Israel’s military stated that 2,500 rockets were fired. Smoke blanketed residential areas in Israel, prompting people to seek shelter behind buildings as sirens blared. Tragically, at least one woman lost her life due to the rocket fire.

“We announce the start of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood and we announce that the first strike, which targeted enemy positions, airports, and military fortifications, exceeded 5,000 missiles and shells,” declared Mohammed Deif, the leader of the al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’ military branch.
The rocket assault served as a smokescreen for an unprecedented, multi-pronged infiltration of fighters. The Israeli military reported at 7:40 am (04:40 GMT) that Palestinian gunmen had entered Israel. While most fighters made their way through breaches in the security barriers separating Gaza and Israel, there was a remarkable incident where a Hamas soldier was observed flying over in a powered parachute.

Additionally, a motorboat carrying fighters was spotted heading toward Zikim, an Israeli coastal town with a military base. One video depicted at least six motorcycles carrying fighters crossing through a hole in a metal barrier. A photograph released by Hamas displayed a bulldozer tearing down a section of the fence.
At 9:45 am (06:45 GMT), explosions resonated in Gaza. By 10:00 am (07:00 GMT), Israel’s military spokesperson announced that the air force had initiated attacks in Gaza.
At 10:00 am (07:00 GMT), Israel’s military confirmed that Palestinian fighters had breached at least three military installations along the frontier – the Beit Hanoun border crossing (referred to as Erez by Israel), the Zikim base, and the Gaza division headquarters at Reim.
Hamas released videos displaying fighters advancing towards a burning building near a tall concrete wall with a watchtower. They also showed fighters apparently gaining control of a section of an Israeli military facility and firing from behind a barricade.
Saleh al-Arouri, deputy leader of Hamas in the occupied West Bank, issued a rallying cry for resistance. He stated, “We must all engage in this battle, especially the resistance fighters in the West Bank,” in a released statement.
Subsequently, several captured Israeli military vehicles were photographed being driven into Gaza and paraded there.
Militants raided the Israeli town of Sderot, as well as another community, Be’eri, and the town of Ofakim, located 30 kilometers (20 miles) east of Gaza, as reported by Israeli media.
Residents in southern Israel reinforced their homes to serve as bomb shelters, utilizing them as secure rooms during the attacks. Israel’s military instructed residents to seek shelter indoors, reassuring them through radio broadcasts, saying, “We will reach you.”
By late evening, Israeli troops were still engaged in efforts to reclaim communities that had been seized by Hamas fighters.
Israel’s national rescue service, Magen David Adom, reported a toll of at least 100 casualties, while hospitals attended to hundreds of wounded individuals. Medical sources in Gaza stated that a minimum of 198 Palestinians lost their lives in the wake of Israeli air strikes. Israel’s foreign ministry alleged that Hamas fighters engaged in door-to-door operations, targeting and killing civilians.
According to Israeli media, armed individuals took hostages in Ofakim. The Palestinian Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for holding Israeli soldiers. Meanwhile, Hamas-affiliated social media accounts posted videos that seemed to depict captives being brought into Gaza. One video displayed three young men, dressed in vests, shorts, and flip-flops, being escorted through a security facility with Hebrew inscriptions on the walls. Additional footage depicted female captives and Israeli soldiers being forcibly removed from a military vehicle.
Israeli airstrikes persisted into late Saturday night, along with ongoing rocket fire into southern Israel. Israeli forces were still engaged in combat with Hamas fighters in 22 different locations near the Gaza Strip, indicating the extensive nature of the attack. The Israeli military stated that they are still contending with “hundreds” of Palestinian infiltrators.
