Clarity On Taxes: FIRS Debunks Claims Of Targeting Content Creators

The agency clarified its stance following earlier reports attributed to the Special Adviser on Media to the FIRS Chairman, Dare Adekambi, suggesting that social media content creators were being targeted as major tax evaders.

Contrary to these reports, an anonymous official from the FIRS affirmed that skit makers fall outside the agency’s jurisdiction.

The official emphasized that the FIRS is solely responsible for collecting Company Income Tax and does not handle Personal Income Tax, which is under the purview of state governments.

Explaining further, the official highlighted that only corporate entities earning profits exceeding N25 million are obligated to pay taxes to the FIRS. Therefore, individual content creators, including skit makers and influencers, are not subject to taxation by the FIRS.

This clarification aims to allay concerns within the digital content creation community and ensure transparency regarding tax obligations in Nigeria’s evolving digital landscape.
