In a significant development, Dantata endorsed the parliamentary system during a consultation visit by House of Representatives members spearheading the transition at his residence in Kano.
This endorsement comes amidst a growing push for constitutional reforms by lawmakers, with over sixty representatives advocating for a return to parliamentary democracy as practiced in Nigeria’s first republic.
Led by Lagos lawmaker Wale Raji, the legislators are championing a bill to amend the 1999 constitution, paving the way for Nigeria’s transition from a presidential to a parliamentary system of governance.
The proposed legislation, titled “The Bills proposing constitutional alterations for a transition to a parliamentary system of government,” marks a significant step towards reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape.
Beyond the corridors of the National Assembly, the momentum for change found resonance during the delegation’s engagement with Aminu Dantata in Kano.
Dantata’s endorsement, citing the cost-effectiveness of the parliamentary system compared to the presidential model, injected newfound vigor into the reform initiative.
This outreach initiative underscores a broader campaign aimed at fostering a national dialogue on the necessity for a more efficient governance framework.
Far from mere constitutional adjustments, the legislators’ mission represents a concerted effort to redefine Nigeria’s governance paradigm, prioritizing fiscal prudence and ensuring governance aligns closely with the aspirations of the populace.
