Man Allegedly Machetes Partner Over Valentine’s Disappointment

The state Commissioner of Police, Gyogon Grimah, revealed this development while addressing journalists in Calabar on Thursday, shedding light on the distressing incident that unfolded in Okuni, Ikom Local Government Area.

According to Commissioner Grimah, the suspect, Ubung, resorted to violence after his 25-year-old lover, Blessing Onawu, reneged on her commitment to spend Valentine’s night with him, despite receiving N7,000 from him for her hairdressing expenses.

In a fit of rage, Ubung armed himself with a machete and launched a brutal attack on Onawu, inflicting severe machete wounds all over her body with the intention to cause harm. In the process, the victim’s mother sustained injuries while attempting to rescue her daughter.

Law enforcement swiftly responded to the distress call, arresting Ubung at the scene of the crime and confiscating the weapon used in the assault. Both the victim and her mother are currently undergoing treatment in separate medical facilities.

Commissioner Grimah affirmed that the suspect has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further interrogation, emphasizing that the police will ensure a thorough investigation is conducted before charging Ubung to court.

While urging the public to collaborate with law enforcement agencies by sharing relevant information to combat crime, Commissioner Grimah reiterated the commitment of the police command to uphold peace and security within the state.
