The company attributed the failure of its initial plan to market dynamics and external pressures.

This revelation comes in response to mounting pressure from two civil society groups, which issued a seven-day ultimatum to BUA Cement, demanding the continuation of the sale of cement at the stipulated price of N3,500 per bag, failing which they threatened to stage protests at the company’s premises.

BUA Cement clarified that it had indeed adhered to its commitment initially by offering cement at the reduced rate for a period spanning three to four months. However, unforeseen challenges arose as intermediaries and wholesalers impeded the smooth distribution of the discounted cement to end-users, thus thwarting the company’s efforts to sustain the affordable pricing strategy.

Mr. Kabir Rabiu, the executive director of BUA Cement, conveyed the company’s perspective, stating, “We believed that by offering cement at N3,500, we could contribute to making the product more accessible and affordable for consumers. However, the market dynamics proved challenging, as intermediaries disrupted the distribution chain, hindering the intended beneficiaries from accessing the discounted price.”

The statement sheds light on the complexities within the cement industry and underscores the difficulties encountered in implementing pricing strategies aimed at benefitting end-users.

Despite the setback, BUA Cement remains committed to exploring alternative measures to ensure affordability and accessibility of cement products, as it continues to navigate the evolving landscape of the construction materials market.

The revelation offers insights into the intricate dynamics shaping the pricing and distribution of essential commodities, underscoring the need for collaborative efforts among stakeholders to address challenges and foster a more inclusive and sustainable business environment.
