The appointment signals a fresh start with a lineup of new faces, marking a departure from the previous administration.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko confirmed the composition of the cabinet on Friday, highlighting its departure from the previous government’s approach. Faye, at 44 years old and without prior elected experience, secured a decisive win in the first round of elections. His victory promises significant reforms and makes him the youngest president in Senegal’s history.

Faye is expected to work closely with his appointed Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, his former mentor who played a pivotal role in facilitating Faye’s political rise.

Sonko emphasized that the new government represents a breakaway from the past and embodies the systemic transformation desired by the Senegalese people.

Among the appointments, Birame Souleye Diop takes on the role of Energy Minister, a crucial position as Senegal prepares for oil and gas production in 2024. Ousmane Diagne, a former public prosecutor at the Dakar Court of Appeal, has been named Justice Minister.

Notably, the government includes four women who will oversee portfolios including Foreign Affairs, Fisheries, Family Youth, and Culture.

Senegal faces significant challenges, including an official unemployment rate of 20 percent. Sonko outlined the government’s priorities, which include creating job opportunities for youth, reducing living costs, and safeguarding human rights.
