Kano Governor Reappoints Chief of Staff, Names Retired General as Special Services DG

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has approved the appointment of Dr. Suleiman Wali Sani as the new Chief of Staff, months after scrapping the office in December 2024. This development marks a strategic shift aimed at strengthening governance and improving service delivery.

The announcement was made in a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, who explained that the decision reflects Yusuf’s commitment to administrative reform and effective coordination.

Dr. Sani, a respected retired Permanent Secretary and seasoned medical practitioner, was until his appointment the Special Adviser to the Governor on Civil Service Matters. A graduate of Ahmadu Bello University with additional credentials from Bayero University and the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), he brings over 40 years of public service experience to the role.

He has held leadership positions in the Ministries of Health and Commerce, served in top hospital management roles, and participated in over 40 state and national committees. His work in health policy, civil service reform, and social development has earned him widespread recognition.

In a related appointment, Governor Yusuf also named retired Major General Mohammed Sani as the Director General of Special Services at the Government House. A decorated infantry officer with over three decades in the Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Sani has a background in peacekeeping, national security, and conflict resolution.

The statement emphasized that both appointments are effective immediately and are part of the administration’s push for inclusive governance.

“These strategic appointments reflect His Excellency’s commitment to reform and inclusive governance. The return of the Chief of Staff office is a deliberate effort to enhance coordination within government,” the governor’s spokesperson said.
