Senate Deputy-President Opposes Bill To Establish National Animal Husbandry And Ranches Commission (Details)
Deputy President of the Senate, Jibrin Barau, strongly opposed a bill to establish the National Animal Husbandry and Ranches Commission, sponsored by Senator Titus Tartenger Zam from Benue State, on Wednesday.
Barau argued that the bill aimed to relocate Fulani herders to their states of origin, which would be impractical as many herders may not know their ancestral roots. He asserted that the bill violated the Nigerian Constitution of 1999, particularly regarding the right to choose one’s residence.
Barau’s opposition sparked a heated debate, though he stood alone as other senators supported the bill. He emphasized that Nigerians should be free to live and work anywhere in the country and advised that the bill be revised to align with the constitution.
Despite Barau’s efforts, the bill passed its second reading and was referred to the relevant committee for a public hearing.
