The announcement was made during a press briefing at the Governor’s Office in Ochudo Centenary City, Abakaliki, on Tuesday. Igwe’s suspension stems from his alleged inability to oversee the proper payment of local government pensions by a council chairman in the state.

This marks the fourth suspension of a commissioner under Governor Nwifuru’s administration. Previously, commissioners for housing, water resources, and health faced similar disciplinary actions for dereliction of duty and gross misconduct.

Governor Nwifuru reiterated his administration’s commitment to prioritizing the “charter of needs” for Ebonyi citizens, emphasizing accountability in governance.

NLC Criticizes Governor Over Worker Sack Threats

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has condemned Governor Nwifuru’s threat to dismiss striking workers protesting the non-implementation of the ₦70,000 minimum wage. The Governor had warned that salaries would be withheld, and striking workers would be replaced if they failed to return to work within 72 hours.

NLC President Joe Ajaero described the Governor’s stance as “irresponsible,” urging the state government to engage in dialogue rather than resort to intimidation. The NLC encouraged workers to intensify their strike to demand the implementation of the promised minimum wage.

Despite the criticism, Nwifuru has maintained that his administration is not indebted to any worker and has already begun implementing a ₦75,000 minimum wage.

This latest suspension and ongoing labour dispute underscore the growing tensions within Ebonyi’s political and administrative landscape.
