Atletico Madrid’s Alvarez opened the scoring just six minutes into the game, finishing off a precise through ball from Thiago Almada with a delicate close-range chip over Brazil goalkeeper Bento.

The hosts doubled their lead just six minutes later when Chelsea’s Fernandez finished a low cross that Brazil’s defense failed to clear, making it 2-0.

Brazil, struggling to contain Argentina’s dominance, was given a lifeline in the 26th minute when a mistake by Cristian Romero allowed Mattheus Cunha to score. Colombia, who led 2-0 early against Paraguay, saw their hopes of closing the gap on the top two teams slip away after a 2-2 draw at home. Goals from Luis Diaz and Jhon Duran gave Colombia a strong start, but Paraguay fought back with goals from Junior Alonso and Julio Enciso.

Venezuela, still in pursuit of their first-ever World Cup appearance, boosted their hopes with a 1-0 win over Peru. Salomon Rondon’s penalty in the 41st minute secured the three points, lifting Venezuela into seventh place, and keeping them in contention for an inter-confederation playoff spot.
