The illegal camp, located along the Mirinwanyi channel of the Imo River in the Komkom area of Oyigbo Local Government Area, was equipped with makeshift houses, fifteen boilers, nine storage tanks, recently acquired pipes, and other costly facilities valued at millions of naira.

Led by the General Officer Commanding, Maj.-Gen. Jamal Abdussalam, the troops used speedboats to reach the camp and assess the situation.

The discovery revealed that approximately five million liters of crude oil had already been stolen for processing in the camp. The army intervened to halt the illicit activities.

Expressing dismay at the situation, Maj. Gen. Abdussalam emphasized the division’s commitment to eradicating illegal refineries and connections within its area of responsibility. Despite the operators fleeing the area, the division is actively pursuing leads to apprehend those responsible for economic sabotage.

The General Officer Commanding highlighted the complexity of the illegal operation, requiring significant financial investment, expertise, and meticulous planning to set up such facilities.

While no arrests have been made, the focus remains on tracking down the masterminds behind the illicit activities.

Maj. Gen. Abdussalam called on people to embrace legitimate businesses and condemned the illegal, criminal, and environmentally damaging activities of illegal oil refining.
