Bayelsa Court Hands Down 5-Year Sentence For Armed Robbery And Firearms Possession

The convicted individuals, Believe Leisure (36) and Jacob Doukumo (42), were arrested by the Bayelsa State Police Command’s Operation Puff Adder on December 24, 2022, along Sangana Creek in Brass Local Government Area. The case was filed under suit number BYHC/BHC/CR/1/2023.

During the trial, it was revealed that Believe Leisure passed away while awaiting trial at the Nigerian Correctional Centre in Okaka, Yenagoa. Consequently, only Jacob Doukumo was present in court for sentencing.

Police Counsel Stella A. Jerry-Friday Esq stated that the convicts were charged with conspiracy to commit felony and armed robbery, offenses punishable under section 1(2)(a) of the Robbery and Firearms (Special Provisions) Act, CAPT. R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

According to the prosecution, on December 24, 2022, at approximately 6:00 AM, Leisure, Doukumo, and three others who remain at large, armed with a single-barrel gun and two machetes, attacked Johnbull New Year and an individual identified as Jackson, robbing them of a 30-horsepower Suzuki outboard engine valued at N600,000.

Following a thorough investigation by the Operatives of Operation Puff Adder, led by Supol Chris Nwaogbo, Leisure and Doukumo were arrested and remanded in custody.

Presiding Judge Justice T.Y. Abasi found the accused guilty on all three counts and sentenced them to five years imprisonment.
