According to the Nigeria Correctional Service spokesperson, Abubakar Umar, the flooding caused the collapse of prison walls and staff quarters in Maiduguri. During the evacuation of inmates to safer facilities with support from security agencies, it was discovered that 281 inmates were missing.

So far, three escapees have been recaptured by the Borno State Police Command: Auwalu Aminu, Abubakar Mohammed, and Kyari Kur. Police Public Relations Officer, Nahum Daso, confirmed their arrests. Kur was caught on October 10 in Gubio town, while Mohammed was apprehended on September 15, 2024, in Gubio after a local tip-off. Aminu was captured on October 16 in Banki, following a police tip-off.

Daso emphasized that the search for the remaining escapees is ongoing, with efforts to bring them back into custody. He confirmed that the re-arrested convicts have been returned to the correctional service, and that police will continue to provide updates on their progress.
