BREAKING: 2024 Appropriation Bill Successfully Passes Second Reading in National Assembly
In a significant development at the National Assembly Complex, the House of Representatives has successfully passed the N27.5 trillion 2024 budget for its second reading on Friday. The passage marks a crucial step forward in the legislative process for the appropriation bill.
Leading the discussion on the general principles of the budget, Kafilat Ogbara, a representative of Kosofe Federal Constituency in Lagos State, described the 2024 Appropriation Bill as a people-centric budget designed to improve the lives of Nigerians. Members of the House took turns during the resumed debate to advocate for an increase in budgetary allocations for crucial sectors such as education and health.
During the deliberations, Obinna Ginger, a member of the Labour Party representing Isiala Ngwa North/South Federal Constituency in Abia State, voiced concerns about the representation of the education sector in the proposed budget. He emphasized the need for an upward review, stating, “From what was presented by Mr. President, the education sector is not fully represented. Let us look at upgrading the allocation to education because we still have less than 26 per cent of the UNESCO benchmark.”
At this stage of the legislative process, known as the second reading, the merits of the bill are thoroughly debated and discussed. Members of the House express their views on various aspects of the budget, allowing for constructive dialogue and potential amendments.
Following the debate, the bill will proceed to the committee stage if a simple majority of members in the chamber support it. The committee stage involves further scrutiny and consideration of the bill’s details before it progresses to subsequent legislative stages. This successful second reading signals a positive trajectory for the 2024 Appropriation Bill as it advances through the legislative process in the National Assembly.
