Breaking: Labour Party Urges Governor Sanwo-Olu To Prioritize Living-Wage For Lagos Workers

The Lagos State Chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has called upon Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to prioritize the implementation of a living wage for workers in the state.

Mrs. Olubunmi Odesanya, the state Publicity Secretary of the party, made this appeal in an interview with Ireporteronline, stressing the need for the governor to address the current socio-economic challenges faced by residents.

Assessing Sanwo-Olu’s performance as he marks the first anniversary of his second tenure, Odesanya emphasized the urgency of improving the living standards of workers who are grappling with the rising cost of living.

“While the minimum wage debacle continues to unfold, it’s evident that the current minimum wage of thirty thousand naira is insufficient,” Odesanya remarked. She underscored the necessity for a living wage that aligns with the socio-economic realities faced by workers.

Highlighting the recent removal of fuel subsidy as a factor exacerbating the inflation rate and driving up the cost of goods and services, Odesanya called for decisive action from both the Federal and State Governments to address the plight of workers.

“The government must propose a minimum wage that reflects the current economic realities,” she asserted, urging for measures to curb wastage, corruption, and excessive salaries among federal lawmakers.

The call from the Labour Party comes in the wake of the recent walkout by organized labour from the Tripartite Committee meeting on Minimum Wage. Despite the federal government’s increased offer to N60,000, the proposed figures have been met with rejection, with organized labour advocating for a wage that truly addresses the needs of workers.
