BREAKING: Minister Resigns Appointment (DETAILS)

Vincent Van Quickenborne

Belgian Justice Minister Vincent Van Quickenborne announced his resignation on Friday, four days following an incident in which a Tunisian migrant, residing unlawfully in the country, fatally attacked two Swedish football fans in Brussels.

During a press conference, he revealed that Tunisia had requested the extradition of Abdesalem Lassoued in August of the previous year, but the matter was not pursued.

“This is an individual, significant, and inexcusable mistake,” he stated, as reported by the Belga news agency. “The involved magistrate failed to pursue this request, and the case was left unattended,” he added.

“I am not seeking any excuses. I believe it is my obligation to resign,” he affirmed.

“This new information from the prosecutors deeply affects me, as I have taken every possible measure to enhance the judicial system.”

The 45-year-old assailant was fatally shot in a police operation on Tuesday.

Official records indicated that Lassoued had submitted asylum requests in Norway, Sweden, Italy, and Belgium. Following the rejection of his asylum plea in 2020, he remained in Belgium without legal status.

Meanwhile, French authorities have apprehended a suspect in connection with the stabbings in Brussels, a source close to the case revealed on Friday. A man was taken into custody on Thursday in the western Loire-Atlantique region, according to the source.
