BREAKING: Hamas Releases Some Hostages (DETAILS)

Gaza’s Hamas leadership released two American hostages on Friday, part of a group of about 200 individuals taken captive during the brutal attacks in Israel on October 7. They hinted at the possibility of more releases.

Judith Tai Raanan and her daughter Natalie Shoshana Raanan returned to Israel late Friday, as confirmed by the Israeli government. Although no specifics regarding their condition were provided, US President Joe Biden promptly expressed his delight at the news.

Hamas announced its collaboration with Qatar and Egypt in efforts to secure the release of its “civilian” hostages, suggesting that further releases might be forthcoming.

At the Gaza border, an Israeli representative greeted the pair, who were then transported to a military facility in central Israel “where their families are awaiting their reunion.”

The American mother and daughter were seized from the Nahal Oz kibbutz near the Israel-Gaza border on October 7 while reportedly on vacation in Israel.

Much like the families of other hostages, the Raanans had initiated a global campaign to exert pressure for their release from Gaza.

Hamas stated that, following interventions by Qatar and Egypt, “(Ezzedine) al-Qassam Brigades released two American citizens for humanitarian reasons.”

Gaza’s Islamist leadership affirmed that they were “collaborating with all mediators to execute the movement’s decision to close the civilian (hostage) dossier if appropriate security conditions permit.” No specific demands were disclosed.

According to Israel, 203 individuals—comprising Israelis, dual citizens, and foreigners—were taken by Hamas militants during the deadliest attacks in Israel’s 75-year history. The government reported at least 1,400 casualties, primarily civilians.

In response, Israel launched an extensive bombing campaign on the Gaza Strip, resulting in a reported minimum of 4,137 deaths, largely among civilians, according to the Hamas administration.

The hostages have emerged as a focal point in Israel, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office asserting the government’s commitment to utilizing “all available means to locate those missing and bring back all the kidnapped.”

The International Committee of the Red Cross facilitated the transportation of the liberated Americans to Israel. Its president, Mirjana Spoljaric, emphasized that their release instilled a “glimmer of hope” for the families of other captives, and implored all parties involved in the conflict to demonstrate “a basic level of humanity.”

This release occurred two days after Biden’s solidarity visit to Israel to extend support in the aftermath of the attack.

He expressed, “Our fellow citizens have endured a harrowing ordeal these past 14 days, and I am overjoyed that they will soon be reunited with their family, who have been gripped by fear.”

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken called for additional releases “promptly and unconditionally.”

Qatar, a significant aid provider to Gaza, hosts two Hamas leaders. A spokesperson from the Qatari foreign ministry disclosed that the country mediated between Hamas and the United States, and the release followed “many days of continuous communication between all the parties involved.”

“We will continue our dialogue with both the Israelis and Hamas, and we hope these efforts will lead to the release of all civilian hostages from every nationality, with the ultimate aim of de-escalating the current crisis and restoring peace,” stated the spokesperson, Majid al-Ansari.

The Israeli military indicated earlier on Friday that the majority of those taken to Gaza were still alive, although some deceased individuals have been discovered during incursions into Gaza.

The military specified that over 20 hostages were minors, while between 10 and 20 were above the age of 60. Additionally, there are between 100 and 200 people classified as missing since the Hamas attacks, according to the army’s information.
