Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu, an ultranationalist politician in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s ruling coalition, expressed dissatisfaction with Israel’s retaliation in Gaza following an attack by Hamas fighters on October 7. The attack, according to Israeli officials, resulted in the deaths of 1,400 people, mostly civilians.

Israel’s military campaign in Gaza since October 7 has led to the reported deaths of 9,488 people, with a majority being women and children, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
In response to the interviewer’s question about advocating the use of an atomic bomb on Gaza, Eliyahu replied, “That’s one option.” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office promptly described the minister’s remarks as “disconnected from reality” and emphasized Israel’s efforts to spare “non-combatants” in Gaza.
Following the backlash, Eliyahu later stated in a post on social media that his comment about the atomic bomb was “metaphorical.” It’s worth noting that Israel has never officially acknowledged possessing a nuclear bomb.
