Call To Action: Group Presses State Governments For Family Planning Resources In PHCs (Details)
The Challenged Initiative (TCI), a prominent Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) operating in Nigeria, has called upon state governments across the nation to ensure the availability of consumables and commodities related to family planning in Primary Health Centers (PHCs). This plea comes amidst growing concerns regarding maternal mortality rates and unwanted pregnancies among women of reproductive age.
Dr. Taiwo Johnson, the Director of TCI Nigeria Hub, emphasized the critical role of making these items readily accessible during a facility tour to PHCs in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State. Dr. Johnson underscored the necessity of this appeal, especially considering the increasing demand for family planning services and the impending conclusion of TCI programs in the states where they operate.
Expressing apprehension about the potential consequences of discontinuing free family planning services initiated by donor partners, Dr. Johnson highlighted the need for states to take responsibility for procuring these essential commodities. She stressed that while the Federal government provides only a fraction of the required commodities, it is imperative for states to develop procurement plans and secure domestic funding to sustain these services.
Acknowledging the commendable efforts of health workers in the face of limited support, Dr. Johnson reiterated TCI’s commitment to identifying and promoting impactful practices and interventions within healthcare facilities. She emphasized the significance of ensuring that every woman has access to family planning services, thereby empowering them to make informed choices about childbirth.
Mrs. Rose Okon and Mrs. Enobong Umoren, officers in charge of Primary Health Centers in Uyo, echoed Dr. Johnson’s sentiments regarding the increasing acceptance of family planning among women. However, they lamented the inadequate supply of essential commodities and consumables necessary for providing these services, while expressing gratitude to TCI for their support thus far.
In conclusion, the appeal by TCI underscores the pressing need for sustained efforts by state governments to prioritize family planning initiatives and allocate resources accordingly. Ensuring the availability of these commodities in PHCs is crucial not only for reducing maternal mortality but also for empowering women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health.
