Just In: Abba-Kyari Released From Custodial-Centre After 27 Months In Detention

Former Deputy Commissioner of Police, Abba Kyari, has regained his freedom from the Kuje Custodial Centre in the Federal Capital Territory after spending 27 months in detention.

Kyari’s release comes after his arrest by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) on February 14, 2022, over alleged involvement with an international drug cartel, as reported by Naija News.

Following his arraignment on March 7, 2022, alongside four members of the Police Intelligence Response Team, Kyari had been consistently denied bail despite numerous applications. However, a recent ruling by a Federal High Court in Abuja granted him bail to attend the burial ceremonies of his late mother, Yachilla Kyari, who passed away on May 5.

Under the conditions of his bail, Kyari is required to surrender his passport to the court and report to the nearest NDLEA office during the bail period.

Although the primary bail application hearing for drug trafficking charges is scheduled for May 31, 2024, Kyari has fulfilled the requirements for his temporary release.

Adamu Duza, the spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service in the Federal Capital Territory Command, confirmed Kyari’s release, stating that he had met the conditions for bail and was released on Friday evening.
