May 30 Killings: Perpetrators Must Be Punished, Says Ohanaeze-Ndigbo (Details)
The apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and help calm the escalating tensions in the South East geopolitical zone of Nigeria. This appeal follows the tragic killing of soldiers from Operation Udoka in Aba, Abia State, on May 30, 2024.
In a statement signed by Ohanaeze’s factional Secretary-General, Okechukwu Isiguzoro, the organization expressed deep condolences to the Nigerian Army and the families of the deceased soldiers. The group urged Biafra agitators to adopt non-violent and peaceful means of engagement, warning that sit-at-home campaigns only intensify division and hostility.
“With heavy hearts and deep sorrow, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organization, offers our heartfelt condolences to the Nigerian Army and the families of the brave soldiers who tragically lost their lives during the barbaric and heinous killings of Operation Udoka forces in Aba, Abia State, on May 30, 2024,” the statement read.
Ohanaeze condemned the killings as unacceptable and devoid of humanity, mourning the loss of the soldiers who they described as beloved sons of Igboland. The organization called on the Nigerian Army to ensure the perpetrators are brought to justice and urged all Igbo deities to hold the criminals accountable.
“Our condemnation is resolute for the resurgence of violence and attacks in Abia, especially in the once peaceful city of Aba, which had enjoyed seven years of tranquility,” the statement continued.
Ohanaeze Ndigbo emphasized the importance of unity and peaceful engagement, urging all Biafra agitators to cease activities that provoke further division and hostility. The organization called for a collective effort to maintain peace and stability in the region.
