Demand Accountability: Femi Falana Calls Out Nigerian Elites Over Poverty Funds Misuse

Human rights lawyer Femi Falana, SAN, has called on Nigerian elites, traditional institutions, youth organizations, women groups, and the general public to demand accountability from state governments regarding the use of poverty funds.

In an interview with Channels Television, Falana disclosed that 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory have received a total of 438 billion naira to combat poverty. He expressed disappointment that, despite this significant allocation, poverty remains a pressing issue in the country.

Falana mentioned that in December, 1.35 billion naira was distributed as part of a post-COVID-19 program, which he had previously criticized as insufficient. Following his criticism, Presidential Aide Tope Ajayi accused him of exaggerating the figures.

However, Falana now feels vindicated as the Federal Government has admitted to disbursing a total of 570 billion naira to states in the past nine months, aligning with his earlier claims.

He urges Nigerians to demand transparency and accountability from their state governments. The public should ask for detailed information on projects funded by these allocations and hold leaders accountable for any misuse of funds.

“We’re talking about 34 states and the Federal Capital Territory having received 438 billion naira to fight poverty. In December, 1.35 billion was given out as part of a post-COVID-19 program. When I pointed out the inadequacy of these funds, I was lambasted by Presidential Aide Tope Ajayi for allegedly exaggerating the figures.”

“Now, the Federal Government has confirmed that a total of 570 billion naira has been allocated to states in the last nine months. This includes the 1.35 billion and the 438 billion, totaling 573 billion. With such substantial funds, I challenge the elites, traditional institutions, youth organizations, women groups, and the general public to demand accountability from state governments. Ask what projects have been completed with these funds.”

Falana’s call to action is a wake-up call for all Nigerians to scrutinize the management of poverty funds and ensure that these resources are used effectively to alleviate poverty in the country.
