DJ Big N Speaks Out: ‘The Wow Factor Of Real Celebrities No Longer Exists’

According to Ireporter Online, renowned Nigerian disc jockey Nonso Temisan Ajufo, popularly known as DJ Big N, has voiced his discontent over what he describes as the erosion of true celebrity status in today’s digital age. Speaking during an interview on the Echo Room podcast, DJ Big N lamented that fame has become easily attainable, with little or no effort required to achieve stardom in the current social media-driven landscape.

He explained that the digital revolution has “decentralised fame,” reducing the exclusivity that once defined being a celebrity. “Fame has been decentralised. The barrier to entry for fame is very low. Before, celebrities were real celebrities. Right now, anybody can become a celebrity. I can say stupid things on the Internet five times, get verified, and start doing adverts — that’s celebrity,” he stated.

Reflecting on the entertainment scene of previous years, DJ Big N recalled how artists such as Phyno and Olamide embodied a distinct aura and “wow factor” that commanded respect and admiration. He contrasted that era with today’s environment, where almost anyone can attain fame by generating attention through controversial online content.

According to him, the evolution of social media and streaming platforms has made attention a democratized commodity, where audiences easily alternate between internationally acclaimed artists like Davido, Rema, Burna Boy, and Wizkid, and viral sensations such as Carter Efe or Peller. “The same person that is listening to Davido, Rema, Burna, or Wizkid can switch to Carter Efe live or Peller,” he observed.

DJ Big N concluded by expressing nostalgia for a time when celebrity status was earned through talent, consistency, and authenticity — not fleeting online trends or viral moments.
