ECOWAS Crisis: Nigeria Takes Center Stage In Mediation Efforts
Amidst the turmoil caused by Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger’s withdrawal from ECOWAS, Nigeria has stepped forward to play a pivotal role in resolving the crisis…..CONTINUE READING
The Federal Government declared its readiness to engage with the governments of the affected West African countries, emphasizing the importance of maintaining economic benefits and democratic values within the regional bloc.
International affairs experts, including Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi and Prof. Bola Akinterinwa, have voiced concerns over the withdrawal, describing it as a development that pits ECOWAS against itself, jeopardizing trade and delaying the return to civil rule in the affected nations.
In an official statement, Nigeria expressed sadness over the withdrawal, highlighting ECOWAS’s role in promoting peace, prosperity, and democracy in the region for half a century. The government stressed its commitment to due process and urged the international community to support ECOWAS in fostering closer partnerships, cooperation, and integration.
The crisis, further intensified by the suspension of the three countries following military coups, has raised geopolitical speculations. Akinyemi pointed to Russia’s involvement, suggesting an attempt to weaken Western influence in Africa. The geopolitical arena is becoming a battleground between Russia and the USA, with potential far-reaching consequences.
Akinterinwa characterized the situation as a “house divided against itself,” emphasizing the need for an African approach to address the underlying issues, particularly the influence of military juntas. Meanwhile, retired Ambassador Ogbole Ode sees the withdrawal as a diplomatic impasse stemming from military intervention in democratic processes.
While Nigeria’s call for engagement aims to resolve the crisis diplomatically, concerns about the immediate withdrawal of the three countries linger. The ECOWAS protocol prescribes a one-year notice period for withdrawals, allowing for the fulfillment of responsibilities during that time. The abrupt departure raises questions about adherence to these provisions.
As ECOWAS works towards restoring constitutional order, the implications on the regional economic bloc are significant. The free movement of persons and goods faces challenges, and citizens in the trilateral exit states may experience changes in immigration status. The disintegrative move contradicts ECOWAS’s founding principles of economic integration, with political issues taking precedence.
Trade repercussions are also a cause for concern, especially for the landlocked countries involved. Visa-free travel and the right of settlement and work, guaranteed by ECOWAS, now hang in the balance. Observers fear a potential setback to the return of civilian rule in the context of battling jihadist violence and poverty.
As Nigeria, the economic powerhouse of ECOWAS, navigates these challenges, there is a realization that the geopolitical landscape in West Africa is undergoing a transformation. The resolution of this crisis will shape the future not only for the directly involved nations but for the entire ECOWAS community. The urgency of diplomatic efforts and the intricacies of regional dynamics underscore the complexity of the situation at hand.
