Emir Sanusi Calls For End To Protests Following Kano Violence And Deaths
Three protesters were reportedly killed on Thursday during violent protests in Kano.
The reinstated Emir of Kano, Lamido Sanusi, has called on parents to prevent their children and wards from participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests. Speaking a day after demonstrations turned violent, leading to looting, property destruction, and fatalities, Mr. Sanusi expressed sorrow over the tragic events.
During a press conference at his palace on Friday, Mr. Sanusi described the situation as a setback for Kano’s development. He emphasized that the violence only harms innocent people, stating, “The young people who died are our children, and the property that was burnt and stolen belongs to the people of Kano.”
Governor Abba Yusuf, who had initially supported the protests, urged organizers to submit their demands civilly. However, after the protests turned violent, Mr. Sanusi lamented the extensive damage, noting that funds needed to rebuild could have been used for youth empowerment, poverty alleviation, education, and healthcare.
Mr. Sanusi called on Kano residents to avoid further violence and urged community leaders and parents to guide the youth away from destructive actions. He prayed for the souls of the deceased, the restoration of looted wealth, and the swift recovery of the injured.
