Falz Reveals Why He Quit Law: “It Would Have Been Chaos

Falz revealed this during a recent episode of the Behind The Story podcast, where he discussed the challenge of balancing his profession as a lawyer with his growing success as a musician.

The 35-year-old entertainer studied law at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom before proceeding to the Nigerian Law School in Abuja, where he was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2012.

Around the same period, Falz began building his music career following the release of his debut single, Wahz Up Guy, in 2011. While pursuing music, he was also actively involved in legal practice, handling litigation cases and working alongside his father, renowned human rights lawyer Femi Falana.

However, as his popularity in the entertainment industry increased, Falz said maintaining both careers became more challenging. He explained that one particular experience in court made him realise that his rising fame could interfere with his ability to practise law effectively.

According to him, a judge once recognised him during a court appearance because of his growing profile as a musician. Although the proceedings continued normally, the incident made him reflect on whether remaining in active legal practice would create distractions in the courtroom.

Falz noted that increased public recognition could affect his relationship with clients, as some individuals might question whether he would have enough time and focus to handle their legal matters due to his demanding music schedule.

He explained that while combining both careers was possible, the level of attention surrounding his music career made it difficult to maintain the professionalism required in legal practice.

The rapper said his visibility as a public figure meant his presence in court could attract unnecessary attention and potentially distract from legal proceedings, making it harder to give clients the full commitment they deserved.

Falz added that his decision to focus more on entertainment was influenced by the need to avoid situations where his celebrity status could interfere with his responsibilities as a lawyer.
