Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, shared the achievements of this special enforcement unit, emphasizing its role in disrupting illegal mining operations that have harmed legitimate mining businesses. Significant actions have taken place across various states, including a large operation in Kogi State where over 3,000 illegal miners were removed from a gold mining site that had been under illegal occupation since 2016.
The crackdown has also targeted foreign miners involved in illegal activities, with successful convictions in Kwara State. In addition, the Mining Marshals have expanded their operations to states like Niger, Zamfara, and Kaduna, areas known for security challenges linked to illegal mining, such as banditry and terrorism financing.
As a result of these efforts, the number of Mining Marshals has increased from 2,200 to 2,679, with further recruitment planned. The Nigerian government is also exploring the use of satellite technology, drones, and miniature robots to improve monitoring of mining sites.
The crackdown is supported by various security agencies, including the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force, underscoring the importance of coordinated efforts to combat illegal mining and its associated threats to national security. The government aims to continue expanding enforcement, improve security, and boost revenues from the solid minerals sector.
