FG Targets Sowore and Other Protest Sponsors: Accounts Frozen and Security Agencies on High Alert

In response to recent nationwide protests, the Nigerian government has placed human rights activist and former presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore, among others, on a watchlist. The Office of the National Security Adviser (NSA) and key security agencies have also ordered the freezing of relevant bank accounts.

The Comptroller General of the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS), Kemi Nandap, confirmed that Sowore is among those monitored, although specific names have not been disclosed. The directive came following protests on August 1, which initially aimed to address rising living costs and insecurity but escalated into violence in several regions, including Kano, Kaduna, Plateau, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Some protesters were seen waving flags of Russia and China, calling for foreign military intervention.

During a joint press conference at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Nandap outlined that the NIS had increased border security and surveillance to prevent foreign intervention. “We have identified some diaspora sponsors on our watchlist. If they attempt to enter Nigeria, they will be detained and handed over to the appropriate authorities,” Nandap said.

The Director General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Yusuf Bichi, represented by spokesperson Peter Afunanya, noted that the DSS was closely monitoring the situation. Some suspects residing abroad are under surveillance, and several bank accounts linked to protest funding have already been blocked.

Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also confirmed that the police had identified some protest sponsors and had blocked their accounts. Many of these individuals are based overseas.

Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, assured the public that the military and security agencies are focused on those attempting to destabilize the country. He praised Nigerians for their commitment to law and order and emphasized that the security forces are dedicated to protecting the nation and upholding democratic values.

Chief of Army Staff, Taoreed Lagbaja, highlighted the army’s commitment to ensuring peace and security, noting that their operational focus remains on combating terrorism and banditry. Lagbaja reassured that ongoing efforts to address internal security issues, including the return of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), would continue.

Chief of Naval Staff, Emmanuel Ogalla, emphasized the Navy’s role in maintaining maritime security and supporting the government’s efforts to reduce poverty and hardship. He stressed that the Navy would act against any attempts to disrupt national stability.

Chief of Air Staff, Hasan Abubakar, reaffirmed the Nigerian Air Force’s dedication to safeguarding the nation’s territorial integrity.

The security agencies, including the Nigerian Customs Service, the NIS, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, all affirmed their commitment to upholding peace and stability in Nigeria.
