According to reports, the attack occurred during a security operation near the border with Burkina Faso and Mali. The soldiers, engaged in a security sweep in Tillaberi, were ambushed in a complex attack.
The ministry disclosed that approximately 30 terrorists were neutralized during the operation. The security sweeps aimed to provide reassurance to the local population facing threats from armed groups involved in criminal activities such as murders, extortion, and cattle rustling.
The assailants, labeled as “terrorists,” reportedly launched an assault using improvised explosive devices and vehicles for suicide attacks on a military unit located between Teguey and Bankilare. The attack resulted in the tragic loss of 23 soldiers, with an additional 17 sustaining injuries.
In response to recent tragic incidents, including the one in Okuama, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, where 16 soldiers and several civilians lost their lives, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a strong military presence in the creeks.
Troops are currently engaged in an intensive manhunt for the prime suspect, Endurance Okodeh, also known as Amangben, along with others involved in the violence. Major General Jamal Abdussalam, the General Officer Commanding the 6 Division, Nigerian Army/Land Component Commander of the Joint Task Force, South-South, Operation DELTA SAFE, emphasized the army’s determination to pursue the mission.
During a condolence visit by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Niger Delta Development Commission, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, Abdussalam reiterated the military’s resolve to retrieve looted weapons and apprehend all perpetrators involved in the heinous acts.
The incident underscores the challenges faced in securing volatile regions and the military’s unwavering commitment to restoring peace and order in affected areas.
