Governor Fubara Defies Legislative Override, Announces New Appointments Amidst Political Turmoil

The governor’s move comes on the heels of the assembly’s decision to override him and pass four bills into law, asserting its legislative authority.

Fubara’s recent appointments include Goodlife Ben as the Acting Chairman of the Local Government Service Commission, Tonte Davies as the Acting Administrator of the New Cities Development Authority (NCDA), and Ine Briggs as the Acting Director General of the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP).

These appointments were confirmed in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, with the appointees directed to assume duty immediately.

Earlier on the same day, the State House of Assembly, led by Martins Amaewhule, voted to pass four bills into law despite Governor Fubara’s refusal to give his assent.

The bills cover areas such as local government amendments, traditional rulers, advertisement and use of state-owned property, and funds management and financial autonomy. The assembly justified its decision by citing constitutional provisions that allow bills to become law without the governor’s assent if passed by a two-thirds majority.

Amaewhule accused the governor of lacking intentions to organize local government elections, escalating tensions within the state. The assembly’s action followed the Supreme Court’s validation of Governor Fubara’s election, further intensifying the political landscape.

Notably, President Bola Tinubu intervened to resolve the conflict between Governor Fubara and Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.

The intervention led to a peace accord, but the recent developments suggest lingering tensions and power struggles in Rivers State. As the political drama unfolds, the state remains at the center of attention, with implications for governance and stability.
