Hamas Has Surrendered To Israeli Forces ‘Waving Their White Flags’?

On October 7, 2023, the Palestinian militant group Hamas launched an attack on Israeli territory, resulting in the deaths of over a thousand Israeli soldiers and citizens, with at least 200 taken hostage.

The majority of people residing in Gaza and the West Bank are Palestinians. The conflict between Israel and Palestine has persisted for decades.

Since 2007, Hamas, the Islamic Resistance Movement, has been in control of Gaza, while the West Bank is governed by the Palestinian Authority under the leadership of President Mahmoud Abbas.

In response to the series of attacks by Hamas on October 7, 2023, Israel initiated a bombing campaign in Gaza. As of November 3, this campaign had resulted in the loss of over 9,000 lives.

However, there have been several widely shared videos online since mid-October from the same source, claiming that Hamas surrendered to Israel’s ground invasion. The most common version of the video, which appears to be produced by a news outlet, alleges that “the Hamas militia was forced to surrender to the Israeli army by waving their white flags in their hands.”

According to this video, attributed to “DCM Global,” the Israeli special forces unit Sayeret Matkal played a role in a significant military operation that rescued Israeli hostages, “neutralized a large number of Hamas militia members,” and compelled Hamas to surrender.

It is important to note that this claim is not true. The video was initially uploaded to a YouTube channel that seems to have changed ownership very recently, and it primarily shares unreliable claims about Israel and Palestine.

As of the time of publication, there is no verified information or reports from major news outlets, the Israeli government, or representatives of Hamas confirming that Hamas has surrendered to the Israeli army. Such a significant event would likely be widely reported across the world.

Currently, Israel continues its attacks on Gaza and the West Bank. The Israeli government has declined calls for a humanitarian ceasefire, expressing concern that it could give Hamas an opportunity to re-arm.

The videos in question were first posted on October 15, while Israel was in the process of mobilizing troops in preparation for a ground invasion of Gaza. The ground invasion officially began on October 28.

While some hostages have been released by Hamas or rescued by the Israeli military, it is estimated that over 200 people are still believed to be held captive.

The Israeli special forces unit, Sayeret Matkal, mentioned in the video, is a legitimate special forces unit known for its involvement in hostage rescue operations. However, news reports from October 21 indicated that the unit was preparing for a hostage rescue operation, not that it had already executed one.

PolitiFact conducted a fact-check on the same video and discovered that it contains footage that is unrelated to the events being described. For instance, a clip showing soldiers holding white flags, which is featured in the video, was uploaded to YouTube in November 2022 with a caption indicating it was filmed in Russia.

The video itself acknowledges that the footage is used for illustration, but it raises suspicion that a supposed news report would incorporate unrelated footage.

Furthermore, the narration in the video raises suspicion. It contains repeated mispronunciations and grammatical errors. The word “Hamas,” for example, is pronounced in several different ways throughout the video, as are words like “Gaza” and “Israeli.”

While poor quality narration could explain some of this, the awkward speech and inconsistent pronunciation heard in the video are characteristics often associated with speech generated by artificial intelligence (AI).

It’s worth noting that utilizing AI-generated speech for news broadcasts or incorporating clearly labeled stock footage doesn’t automatically mean a video is false. However, these factors should be considered as potential red flags indicating that the video may not be reliable.

The YouTube channel in question, DCM Global, does not appear to be a recognized or reputable news organization. Its associated website uses a free WordPress template that has not been customized and lacks original content.

This channel has previously uploaded numerous videos about Israel and Hamas, including claims that have been debunked by fact-checking organizations like PolitiFact and USA Today. Additionally, a claim made by the channel regarding Egypt sending troops and armored vehicles into Gaza to fight Israel was also debunked by fact-checkers at DW. The channel has recently posted videos featuring other false claims, such as the assertion that the Israeli army rescued all hostages taken by Hamas.

What is particularly unusual about DCM Global is its history. Initially, the channel was named “Geblo” and exclusively featured videos of a Turkish videogame streamer known as “Geblo” or “Ben Geblo”. On October 4, Geblo uploaded a video in which he stated that he was leaving the channel due to insufficient earnings. He also shared a link to an alternative channel where he might upload videos in the future, based on demand.

It remains unclear whether Geblo still manages the channel or if control was transferred to the current operators of DCM Global. Geblo continues to regularly upload gaming videos to a related TikTok account and a separate YouTube channel. However, since his video on October 4, the original Geblo channel has only posted DCM Global videos.

This history suggests that DCM Global leveraged the popularity of the Geblo channel to ensure that its false claims about Israel and Hamas would reach a wider audience.

Given this context, videos from this channel should not be considered trustworthy and should be disregarded.
