Idah Peterside Warns Of Xenophobic Tensions Ahead Of Super Eagles vs. Bafana Bafana Clash
Idah Peterside, former Nigerian goalkeeper, has asserted that South Africans may target Nigerians regardless of the outcome of the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations match between the Super Eagles and the Bafana Bafana in Ivory Coast…..CONTINUE READING
Peterside made these remarks in response to a recent advisory issued by the Nigerian High Commission in Pretoria to its citizens residing in South Africa.
The advisory, released on Monday, referenced “potentially inflammatory” online remarks by some South Africans against Nigerians living in the country, especially in light of the upcoming AFCON semi-final.
The High Commission, situated in Pretoria, South Africa, cautioned Nigerians to remain vigilant and exhibit good behavior before, during, and after the match.
In an interview with Channels Television ahead of Wednesday’s AFCON semi-final, Peterside insisted that there exists a rivalry for supremacy between the two nations, which extends beyond football and borders on xenophobia.
“The circular was forwarded to me. This isn’t the first time we’ve encountered harassment. But there’s an underlying rivalry between these countries,” Peterside remarked.
“This rivalry is about supremacy, extending beyond football into politics. On a lighter note, their women tend to favor us more than their men, contributing to this rivalry, which transcends football. It has occurred numerous times, and once again, we cannot overlook this.”
He further remarked, “Whether we win or they win, there may be attacks. This isn’t about football; it’s about xenophobia.
