In the Face Of Conspiracy: Senate Backs Akpabio With Overwhelming Vote Of ConfidenceThe Nigerian Senate has expressed its confidence in the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the entire Senate leadership. According to Naija News, Senators passed the vote of confidence during Thursday’s plenary session. This came in response to online reports that operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS) had invaded the National Assembly complex on Wednesday amid rumors of a potential impeachment plot against Akpabio.
The reports indicated that a faction of dissatisfied northern senators, allegedly unhappy with President Bola Tinubu, is trying to revive efforts to remove Akpabio from his post.
In response, Akpabio dismissed the speculation surrounding his impeachment. “We are here, peacefully going about our work, unaware of the mischief occurring behind us. If there’s a lot of buzz about this, it’s likely that whoever spread this fake news is being paid handsomely for the traffic it generates. I hope the public understands that this is completely false, and the chamber is stable. The issue of impeachment is not on the table,” he stated during Wednesday’s plenary session. He added, “Such falsehoods are part of our daily challenges. People use AI to twist stories, likely to drive traffic and earn money from platforms like YouTube.”
Akpabio has referred the matter of the fake news to the Committee on Special Duties for further investigation.
In a prompt response, Shehu Kaka, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, assured that the committee would look into the issue and report back to the Senate.
