Just In: Doguwa Advocates For Local Government-Autonomy As Key To Addressing Insecurity And Poverty (Details)
Alhaji Ado Alhassan Doguwa, the House of Representatives Chairman of the Downstream Petroleum Committee, has emphasized the critical importance of achieving local government autonomy in Nigeria. Speaking to newsmen in Kano on Saturday, Doguwa asserted that many of the nation’s current issues, such as insecurity, poverty, and underdevelopment, are direct results of the malfunctioning local government system.
Doguwa, dressed in his traditional chieftain regalia, stated, “I remain the Sardauna Doguwa because, as far as I am concerned, the controversy surrounding the dissolution of the Kano emirates remains a subject of litigation.” He highlighted the significant achievements of the House in passing essential legislation, particularly the Petroleum Industry Bill, which has elevated Nigeria’s standing in the global petroleum sector.
Reflecting on the nation’s legislative progress, Doguwa said, “The country is better today because of several other bills that were passed into law.” He argued that ensuring local government autonomy should be a top priority, advocating for the Speaker of the House to chair the Constitutional Review Committee to drive this change.
Doguwa believes that granting full autonomy to local governments will lead to a significant reduction in crime and insecurity, stating, “With local governments’ full autonomy, Nigerians would once more sleep with their eyes closed and move around everywhere without the fear of being molested or taken away.” He expressed confidence that this change would restore stability and development across the nation, making it a crucial step in addressing Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges.
